THE EFFECT OF POVERTY ON SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES

Dr Adah, Richard Udo
July 15, 2026

Abstract

The importance of small and medium scale enterprises has not been in doubt; unfortunately, classifying business into large and medium scale is subjective and premised on different value
judgment. Such classification has followed different criteria such as employment, sales or investment
for defining small and medium scale enterprises. Poverty includes inadequate income, shelter, public
infrastructure, protection of poorer groups, voicelessness and powerlessness within the political
system and bureaucratic structures leading to little or no possibility of receiving entitlements;
organizing, making demands and getting a fair response. This research work shall conceptualize the
effect of poverty on small and medium scale enterprises.
