COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AS A SUSTAINABLE PATHWAY TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
Community approach to development is a key strategy to national development. Within the context of contemporary discourse basic development need is a major theme, this is because basic needs when met will ultimately impact on national development. Meeting the actual needs of the poor rural dwellers will ultimately unleash national development especially in developing societies. Though various theories of development like capitalist, modernization and socialist theories have been in practice sadly they are not able to adequately actress the challenges of development hence the search for alternative approaches that can address and provide a more realistic alternative. This implies that the emphasis have shifted from industrial growth to real growth and equity that can alleviate poverty. Despite previous attempt, 70% of the rural population are still poor, hence the need to demystify these approaches and adopt strategies that can sustain real development. This is what the paper seeks to address.
